    • One of Vermont’s firstmountain resorts, Pico opened in 1937 with a tow hooked up to theengine of a Hudson auto. Currently under the same ownership as Killington, the winter lifts at this family-friendly resort are only open Thurs. – Monday and holiday weeks.
    • Lifts: 6, including 2 expressquads, 2 doubles, and 2 triples.
    • Trails and slopes: 214 skiableacres, with 50 trails adding up to 17 miles, the largestpercentage of intermediate, all funneling to the base lodge.
    • Vertical drop: 3,050 feet.
    • Snowmaking: 161 acres.

    • One- and two-hour mountain and backcountry tours, plus snow-cross trackfor kids ages 4-11. Rental helmets, clothing, and boots. This isalso a source of info about local clubs.

    • Mountain Meadows Cross Country Ski and Snowshoe Area (802-775-7077; 802-775-0166;xcskiing.net), 2363 Rt. 4, Killington, behind Base Camp Outfitters, just east of the main Killington access road. Open daily (conditions permitting) 9-5. The 57 km of trails are groomed for skating and classic stride. There are separate snowshoeing trails, plus backcountry terrain. Some instruction, rentals, kids’ programs.
    • Mountains Meadows Lodge offershot soup and sandwich lunches for skiers, five minutes down thewooded trail.
    • Mountain Top Nordic Ski & Snowshoe Center (802-483-6089; moutaintopinn.com), MountainTop Rd., Chittenden. Sixty km of trails, 40 km of which are groomed, begin at the Nordic Center, one of the country’s oldest commercial areas of the mountains and of Chittenden Reservoir; rentals, lessons, and limited snowmaking.
    • Hawk Inn & Mountain Resort (802-672-3811; hawkresort.com), Rt. 100 south, Plymouthoffers rentals, lessons, and groomed trails meandering along a brook.
    • Nordic Center of the Mountain Top Inn & Resort (802-483-2311)offers half-hour ride by reservation. Passengers must be 5 years or older.
    • Mountain Top Inn &Resort. (802-483-2311); mountaintopinn.com). Thirty-minute horse-drawn sleigh rides daily. $25 adults, $15 children under 14. Private rides can be arranged.
